After watching one of the theorist videos, reflect on what you have learned.
Compose a paper that addresses the following:
- Explain why you chose to watch this particular theorist’s video.
- Describe the parts of your personal philosophy where you agree or disagree with this theorist.
- Is there anything that surprised you in the video? If so, what surprised you?
- Would you recommend this video to another student? If so, why would you recommend it?

Florence Nightingale theorists
Florence Nightingale has been a renowned nursing theorist in the nursing profession. Her model and fundamentals in nursing have improved healthcare worldwide. I decided to watch Florence Nightingale’s video because of her focus and determination on human needs in a broader way. She advocated for clean air, good food, and sanitation, thus majoring on the environment as a major concept in ensuring individuals access quality care. Her main goal was to ensure that nurses focus on the caring concept and treat patients with respect (Fitne, n.d.). In the interview conducted in the video, one of the nurses specified Florence’s writings specifically on care, respecting the patients by avoiding unnecessary noise, closing rooms, and windows when dealing with patients for privacy purposes, and being confidential (Fitne, n.d.).
Agree with the Theorists
I agree with Florence’s work because the tremendous change in healthcare organizations would not be possible if it were not for her. I like the fact that she lamented on the three dimensional factors that are person, health, and environment in ensuring proper nursing care. Nurses must understand that patients are not clients instead people in need of care. Therefore, their psychological, physical, and spiritual needs must be considered in the process of caring for them. Florence’s theory has also been considered by some health organizations like the World Health Organization in providing clean water, sanitation, and enhancing the environment for sustainability.
Surprised
The theorist’s determination to change people’s views on the nursing profession is interesting. For instance, she proved to her mother that nursing is a calling and not necessarily about social classes (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Despite her mother being against her decision to focus on nursing, she decided to start her research based on the little knowledge she had acquired in school. Through interaction with people, while practicing, she managed to document her work and focus on caring and nursing as a calling and not a monetary profession.
Recommendations
Florence’s theory is a knowledgeable tool for nursing students and community members at large. I would recommend the video to my colleagues at the emergency room and the health workers in my community. The video will change my colleagues’ perceptions, especially that time when most nurses always feel like quitting due to workload. The video will help them understand that nurses are special people who are highly honored and respected globally, all because of Florence’s model. Such statements will motivate them and change their mindset, thus focusing on providing quality care and patients’ outcome.
Conclusion
The theory is a stepping stone, especially in my profession. It has opened my eyes to acknowledge that I am among the few people called to take care of human beings and improve their wellbeing (McEwen & Wills, 2019). Therefore, irrespective of the challenges, I should never forget that I have emerged to be among the most honored people in this world due to Florence’s model. The theorists’ model is well structured from the beginning, how it all began, and the major dimensions of focus, thus giving a better understanding to everyone about the nursing profession. Florence is among the few people brought into this world to create change in human lives without expecting anything in return. Despite coming from a wealthy background, she despised all odds and started her nursing theory. During her advocacy for people’s health rights, some agencies and the government rejected her work, but she never gave up, thus showing how the nursing profession is about patience, caring, and determination.
