Nursing theories are essential in promoting quality health and wellbeing of individuals. Several health organizations have applied nursing theories in their clinical expertise to enhance quality care and patient outcomes. Various theorists developed nursing theories and were motivated and influenced by diverse factors to contribute to the nursing profession. Several theorists continued structuring their ideas and working on them constantly to better facilitate their concepts, especially with the changing health systems worldwide. This paper reviews Florence Nightingale’s theory, effect that the implication of this theory on nursing administration, management, and education.

Florence Nightingale’s Nursing Theory

Florence Nightingale’s theory began as a germ theory to eradicate germs and reduce infections, especially those caused on the surface of the environment (McEwen & Wills, 2014). She advocated for cleanliness, fresh air, and safe water in improving the healthcare and wellbeing of individuals. In treating the injured soldiers during her nursing practice, she noticed most of them were dying due to lack of clean food, safe water, and a clean environment. She proposed that treatment should be conducted in well-ventilated rooms, with closed doors and windows that enhance good circulation and flow of air in the rooms. Florence Nightingale emphasized that a person’s health and wellbeing depend on a clean environment, nutritious food and clean water (McEwen & Wills, 2014).

Effects of the Implications on Nursing Administration

Florence Nightingale’s theory is essential in nursing administration. The theory has led to a tremendous increase of good healthcare settings that are clean, with ventilated rooms and well-structured rooms that enhance nurse and patient satisfaction, thus increasing patient outcomes. The strategic plan of achieving quality care based on Florence Nightingale’s theory can be applied in nursing administration to ensure that scheduling, staffing and quality care are enhanced. This can be done through organizing clean nursing clothing, ensuring the hospital beds are sufficient and arranged accordingly, the windows are well lit to allow free circulation and ventilation of air and light, and managing confidentiality of patients (McEwen & Wills, 2014).

Conclusion

Nursing theories have improved the healthcare systems and helped in reducing infections. Several nursing theorists’ works have contributed to developing quality care and nursing education worldwide. Both novice and experienced nurses can acquire new knowledge and skills that can improve clinical expertise and enable them to provide the best patient care. Therefore, nursing theories have and will continue to dominate the nursing practice in ensuring quality patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.
