Topic 1: Do you feel that nurses believe that there are ethical concerns related to nursing informatics?
Yes, in my health care facility, nurses have expressed numerous ethical concerns that are related to nursing informatics, especially in relation to the privacy and confidentiality of patients and their health information. The use of nursing informatics, therefore, increases the chances of data breaches occurring, especially in instances where data is not effectively secured or when data is misused. The different violations of privacy laws in the use of nursing informatics include illegal access of patient files and nurses failing to log off from computers when they’re not in use (Phillips, 2015). Nurses can also lend or access passwords which can cause data breaches. The loss of electronic devices, texting patient information, and failing to shred printouts with private information can also lead to data breaches during the use of nursing informatics. When nurses do not take effective measures and precautions in the use of nursing informatics technology, ethical issues related to the privacy and confidentiality of patients can therefore emerge (Phillips, 2015).
Topic 2: Discuss how the use of health information (HI) technology has influenced your current nursing practice. Give examples.
The use of health information technology has influenced my current nursing practice in numerous ways, including improving accessibility. In my healthcare facilities, the use of technology such as electronic health records has therefore allowed me to access the digital version of patients’ medical history on demand which has increased my ability to deliver quality and timely health care services to patients. The use of health information has also played a significant role in helping to address the challenge of the nursing shortage. Technology has therefore helped to alleviate physical and mental exhaustion caused by the numerous tasks and duties that nurses are assigned in healthcare facilities with low staffing ratios (Farokhzadian et al., 2020).
