Database Project

This week we will apply concepts from the readings to a database project. Data is collected, entered, monitored, extracted, and analyzed for various purposes. This assignment will provide experience in searching a database, reviewing and analyzing specific data elements and formulating the information into a written report. This is not intended to be a lengthy or time-consuming assignment but will require some effort.

As a nurse leader/educator, you will have many opportunities to use reports and documents that are sent to you for completion. In addition, being able to write a brief and concise summary is an essential and valuable skill. A written report document has been created for you and will be used in your final submission. Database Report

Background Information

Locate and provide the name of a publicly accessible database for healthcare

The name of the database is Healthcare Delivery Research Program and is maintained by the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences department of the National Cancer Institute.

Citation for the website in APA format

Data & tools. (2021, September 20). Healthcare Delivery Research Program. https://healthcaredelivery.cancer.gov/data/
What is the purpose of the database?

The purpose of the database is to support the maintenance and development of various tools and data available for research related to cancer patients.

Data Details

What type of information is available (such as but not limited to age, gender, diagnosis, state, etc.)?

The website has four categories of databases that include SEER-Medicare Linked database, SEER Medicaid linked database, SEER Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (SEER-CAHPS), and SEER-Medicare Health Outcomes Survey (SEER-MHOS). The databases provide various types of data, including population-based data on Medicaid beneficiaries suffering from cancer, population-based information for an array of epidemiological research questions related to health services for cancer patients, and experiences of Medicare beneficiaries. The website focuses mainly on the data related to the care and quality of life of older cancer patients and survivors. SEER-CAHPS provides information related to comorbidities, patterns of care, treatment costs and healthcare providers and facilities, access to care, care coordination, provider communication, and timeliness of care. SEER-MHOS provides information related to activities of daily living, the effectiveness of care, and health-related quality of life.
Who oversees the data, and how often is the database is updated?

The Healthcare Delivery Research Program oversees the data. The program is organized into three branches that include Healthcare Assessment, Outcomes and Health Systems and Interventions, which reflects areas of data that each branch oversees. Program directors in all three branches provide every form of advice, consultation, and information related to funding opportunities, science policies and procedures and grant applications. The database is updated on a yearly basis. This facilitates the achievement of the program’s vision and mission of improving health and achieving optimal health outcomes for cancer patients and their families.
When was the last update?

The last update was on 28th January 2022.

Analysis

How can the information in the database be used? Explain

The information in the database can be used to improve care and health outcomes for cancer patients. The database provides information relating to the experiences of cancer patients at various stages of the cancer care continuum. This information can be used to identify areas with poor performance leading to the identification of new strategies for improvement. The epidemiological data provided by the database can be used by relevant health agencies to make predictions and develop strategies related to cancer prevention, especially at the community level. The database provides information on physicians’ use of therapies, screening modalities, and new technologies and their influence on cancer burden. This information can be used by health facilities to improve care for cancer patients through policies and procedures.
Are there any restrictions to accessing and using the data?

Why this is important to know? Explain

There are no restrictions to accessing and using the data. It is important to be aware of any restrictions to access and use of the data to ensure that one is faced with ethical issues that may lead to legal implications. The information provided in the database mainly focuses on facilitating research questions related to cancer care. The information is accessible to any researcher interested in cancer care.

Application

Based on your research, what are the benefits of data mining?

Data mining has different benefits depending on the party utilizing the information and the ways in which the information is used. According to Parva et al. (2017), the data mining process fosters a better understanding of dependency among various attributes, interpret sub-system processes, create laws, and make predictions. One benefit is the ability to predict the future. Data mines provide information that can be used to establish patterns and predict future trends in the relevant fields. For example, for the website identified, the data relating to epidemiology can be used to make future estimates on prevalence and incidence rates. Data mining also facilitates decision making. The ability to make predictions facilitates accurate and informed decision making. Future patterns can inform decision making at various stages and areas of operations.
What are the challenges of data mining?

Data mining challenges stems from the dynamic nature of the technology used in data mining. One major challenge is maintaining security, data integrity and privacy. According to research, privacy protection is one of the essential aspects of data mining that is mostly breached by many data miners intentionally and unintentionally (Dayala, 2020). Another challenge relates to the mining of distributed and multiagent data, which, if not properly managed, can lead to sabotaging of the data. Other challenges include noisy and incomplete data, data visualization, incorporation of background information, user interface, and scalability and efficiency of utilized algorithms.
What is the correlation between data mining and evidenced-based practice?

Data mining is a primary feature of evidence-based practice. Data mining entails analyzing data from a large database to identify patterns or trends and other useful information that can inform decision making. Evidence-based practice is promoted by the ability to extract meaningful information from massive clinical databases. Data mining enhances the collection of useful information used to inform practice based on the evidence of the effectiveness of an intervention or a strategy. In nursing practice, nurse researchers are in the ideal position to transform information in data repositories into understandable and useful knowledge to provide guidance in the nursing practice and promote research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
How can leveraging data be used for quality improvement?

Leveraging data promotes the conversion of raw data into variable and actionable insights. Leveraging data can be used to improve quality by promoting the identification of areas with poor performance and poor outcomes and making predictions based on current patterns and trends. Leveraging data can also be used to improve quality by facilitating decision making. Data can be used to make the best decision based on the effectiveness and outcomes of each decision. It can also be used in benchmarking the performance of an organization against other organizations in the industry. Leveraging data can also improve quality by facilitating personalized care and addressing barriers and challenges in care delivery.
What is the role of nursing informatics in data management?

Nursing informatics plays an essential role in bridging the gap between data and nursing practice. This is achieved by combining clinical experience with data expertise. The nurses working in the informatics field plays three major roles, including validating data quality, understanding and communicating the reasons behind the implementation of new process and implementing the new processes. Nursing informatics guide data-driven processes and equips nurses with knowledge and understanding.
In your role as a Nurse Administrator/Leader or Nurse Educator, how do you foresee using data and information? What data and information would be the most useful? Include a specific example.

As a nurse leader, I can foresee the use of evidence to improve the performance of nurses and health outcomes. I intend to build my knowledge of evidence-based practice to improve my ability to perform effectively. This is especially in the area of management decision making. According to Majers and Warshawsky (2020), a leader that does not understand evidence-based nursing practice is less likely to promote a culture of use of the evidence-based practice in clinical practice. I will also utilize data and information to implement policies guidelines. The most useful data will relate to patient experiences and nurse performance. For example, data and information indicating patient experiences in terms of communication and education relating to managing their conditions will be essential in improving the two areas through policies requiring patients to be provided with education and improving communication.
