This week we will apply concepts from the readings to a database project. Data is collected, entered, monitored, extracted, and analyzed for various purposes. This assignment will provide experience in searching a database, reviewing and analyzing specific data elements and formulating the information into a written report. This is not intended to be a lengthy or time-consuming assignment but will require some effort.

As a nurse leader/educator, you will have many opportunities to use reports and documents that are sent to you for completion. In addition, being able to write a brief and concise summary is an essential and valuable skill. A written report document has been created for you and will be used in your final submission. The databases provide various types of data, including population-based data on Medicaid beneficiaries suffering from cancer, population-based information for an array of epidemiological research questions related to health services for cancer patients, and experiences of Medicare beneficiaries. The website focuses mainly on the data related to the care and quality of life of older cancer patients and survivors. Data mining has different benefits depending on the party utilizing the information and the ways in which the information is used. According to Parva et al. (2017), the data mining process fosters a better understanding of dependency among various attributes, interpret sub-system processes, create laws, and make predictions. One benefit is the ability to predict the future. Data mines provide information that can be used to establish patterns and predict future trends in the relevant fields. For example, for the website identified, the data relating to epidemiology can be used to make future estimates on prevalence and incidence rates. Data mining also facilitates decision making. The ability to make predictions facilitates accurate and informed decision making. Future patterns can inform decision making at various stages and areas of operations.
What are the challenges of data mining?

 

Data mining challenges stems from the dynamic nature of the technology used in data mining. One major challenge is maintaining security, data integrity and privacy. According to research, privacy protection is one of the essential aspects of data mining that is mostly breached by many data miners intentionally and unintentionally (Dayala, 2020). Another challenge relates to the mining of distributed and multiagent data, which, if not properly managed, can lead to sabotaging of the data. Other challenges include noisy and incomplete data, data visualization, incorporation of background information, user interface, and scalability and efficiency of utilized algorithms.

What is the role of nursing informatics in data management?

 

Nursing informatics plays an essential role in bridging the gap between data and nursing practice. This is achieved by combining clinical experience with data expertise. The nurses working in the informatics field plays three major roles, including validating data quality, understanding and communicating the reasons behind the implementation of new process and implementing the new processes. Nursing informatics guide data-driven processes and equips nurses with knowledge and understanding.
In your role as a Nurse Administrator/Leader or Nurse Educator, how do you foresee using data and information? What data and information would be the most useful? Include a specific example.

 

As a nurse leader, I can foresee the use of evidence to improve the performance of nurses and health outcomes. I intend to build my knowledge of evidence-based practice to improve my ability to perform effectively. This is especially in the area of management decision making. According to Majers and Warshawsky (2020), a leader that does not understand evidence-based nursing practice is less likely to promote a culture of use of the evidence-based practice in clinical practice. I will also utilize data and information to implement policies guidelines. The most useful data will relate to patient experiences and nurse performance. For example, data and information indicating patient experiences in terms of communication and education relating to managing their conditions will be essential in improving the two areas through policies requiring patients to be provided with education and improving communication.
