Module Two: HEENT and Skin Assessment Discussion 2

This week you have studied advanced physical assessment of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, head, neck and skin (HEENT).

Describe the classification of rashes. What additional resources for HEENT advanced health assessment skills have you found beneficial in developing your knowledge and psychomotor skills this week?

Post a concept to the discussion board that you have had difficulty with and note where you are with resolution of your difficulties.

Please describe the issue completely, citing your sources so that your classmates can reference the information and provide additional “clinical pearls”. In other words, please include primary sources and/or reliable electronic sources to support your arguments.

Module Two: HEENT and Skin Assessment Discussion 2

HEENT assessment entails the bodily inspection that chiefly concerns itself with the head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat. A rash is an irritated skin, which is typically an indication of a core disorder or illness. A rash can be temporary, and it is only seldom a sign of a grave issue. Some of the classifications of rashes include the following. First, macule. A macule is a demarcated area of change in regular skin color, with no skin raise or depression (Linton, 2020). Second, a papule is a solid elevated laceration up to 0.5 cm in highest diameter. Lastly, nodule. A nodule is similar to a papule but is situated deeper in the dermis or the subcutaneous tissue (Linton, 2020). The nodule is distinguished from the papule because of depth rather than its size.

Some of the additional resources for HEENT advanced health assessment skills is one by Haber et al. (2015), incorporates oral health in HEENT to give rise to HEENOT. Certainly, in conducting HEENT assessment, there should be diagnosis and the treatment of oral health. Another resource is Rhoads and Petersen (2018), highlighting advanced health assessment and diagnostic reasoning. In all these cases, they have helped in developing knowledge and psychomotor skills.

An area that I have experienced difficulty is understanding the significance of a HEENT examination and some of the reasons that lead to the performance of a HEENT examination. Presently, I have reviewed different resources such as “The pediatric physical examination” by Drutz, Duryea, and Torchia (2020), which has made me understand that a HEENT assessment commences with the examination of the head through visualization of the head for shape and presence of hair. Further, head examination indicates the presence of scalp defects, abnormal lesions, or lacerations.
